What is the total area of planet Earth? How many square meters does it have? How many square meters of the planet are inhabited? How many people can fit within one square meter (before and after the pandemic)? How many people in the world don’t even have one square meter to live in? If we were to divide the total inhabited area by the number of people, would each person be able to have at least a piece of the planet?
Curatorial text by Olga Sureda: In “A piece of planet,” a sign with the inscription “Private Hunting Area” – found by the artist in the forests of rural Barcelona – delimits one square meter with a satin ribbon, speaking to the value of land and its ownership. It questions the public/private property dichotomy at a time when its value is imbalanced, taking as reference the assertion of French anarchist Pierre-Joseph Proudhon, “Property is theft.”
