Victor Gonçalves (São Paulo, 1989) is a visual artist who has lived between Switzerland and Portugal since 2017. He holds a degree in Geography (UNESP, Brazil, 2011), with further studies in Art History (IEB-USP, Brazil, 2012) and Drawing (Ar.Co, Lisbon, 2020). His practice sits within the field of expanded drawing, articulating installations and objects.
Gonçalves works with materials such as roots, leaves, graphite, fibers, and seeds alongside motors, cables, gears, and paper. The possibility of collapse is central to this investigation, not as accident, but as something the work itself can arrive at through repetition: a machine whose movement is almost imperceptible, a mechanism that drifts from its programmed cycle, a piece in balance that could give way at any moment.
In a context of hyper-stimulation, Gonçalves’s work invites another mode of attention, an experience that demands the body of the viewer: leaning in, looking up, breathing, lingering. It is in this tension between the hyper-stimulated world and the objective reality of the moment of encounter that the work perhaps happens.
